This is a photograph of the principal entrance at Gortyn in the Mesara Plain near the Kommos archaeological site. This is the prototype of the stone piers for the three gateways planned for phase 2 of the Kommos Conservation & Development Plan to control access and egress to and from the proposed archaeological park.

Here we can see the Gortyn steel gate pattern of tubular steel with solid steel under panel and welded wire in a vertically oriented rectangular pattern.
This is the principal eastern gateway to the southern area of the Kommos site. There is barbed wire above the welded wire mesh, steel pipe frame.

This Gate Location Plan from the 1998 Conservation plan by James Stratis of the fenced archaeological site indicates the three proposed gateway locations, which roughly correspond to those that presently exists and have proven to be well considered locations over the 32 years of site co-management between the Greek government and by the Excavation Director and President of the Kommos Conservancy Joseph Shaw.
